Don't Miss the Second Annual The 2010 Gilpin County Film Festival supports two of Colorado’s treasured Institutions – Central City Opera and the Gilpin Historical Society. The feature film In the Shadow of the Stars, shown in the historic Central City Opera House, is a hilarious and affectionate look at the path to stardom inside the competitive world of grand opera and is a Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature. David Hockney: The Colors of Music, a rare and intimate portrait of one of the most popular and influential artists of the 20th century and the world-class opera sets that Hockney designed over a 30-year period, will be shown in the Gilpin County Courthouse. The festival also includes a Lecture and Silent Film Montage with Film Historian and Producer David Emrich and Denver Union Station: Portal to Progress, a new historical documentary featuring a special forward by celebrated Colorado filmmaker Jim Havey. Both historic film sessions will be shown in the exclusive Williams Stables black box theater. A special exhibit from theater legend Henry Lowenstein’s private collection will be on display in the Teller House lobby during the festival. Lowenstein is Denver’s most prominent theater figure, producing hundreds of plays in the Bonfils-Lowenstein Theater. After the theater closed, he took his talents to the Denver Civic Theater and is responsible for giving many women and minority actors their big break on stage. The exhibit will project photographs Henry took in the early 1960’s while working at the Central City Opera, featuring vibrant set designs from productions including; Madame Butterfly, Carmen, and Ballad of Baby Doe. In a unique twist, award-winning filmmakers Allie Light and Irving Saraf relegate the divas to the background and focus on a limelight-craving group of “choristers” — the seldom-noticed singers who stand behind the soloists portraying peasants, soldiers and slaves. Weaving together portions of eight acclaimed operas with personal interviews and behind-the-scenes footage from auditions and rehearsals, the film explores the choristers’ blurred boundary between their on and off-stage lives. Through intimate and often comedic revelations, the individual stories of these aspiring singers emerge: we meet a tenor who grew up in the slums of the Bronx and was cured of his insanity through music; a trucker who practices while on the road in his semi; and the singing couple who perform Mozart while nursing their small baby. 4:30pm Lecture and Silent Film Montage with Film Historian and Producer David Emrich at the Williams Stables 4:30pm Denver Union Station: Portal to Progress at the Central City Courthouse 6pm VIP Reception at the Thomas House Museum hosted by Century Casino
