Music! Words! Opera! - Professional Development for Educators

Three Teachers in Pig Outfits

A FREE* SUMMER WORKSHOP for EDUCATORS ready to learn some NEW skills and have a lot of FUN while adding to their teaching arsenal!

July 5-9, 2010
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Graduate level credits available

LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN, RIGHT?
Come explore new worlds and unleash your creativity at Central City Opera’s annual Music! Words! Opera! workshop. Master teachers guide you through a process you can replicate and adapt with your own students, using opera to teach and enhance core subjects. The learning really explodes when you guide your students through the creation and performance of their own original opera with support from Central City Opera teaching artists. The Music! Words! Opera! curriculum provides the foundation.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN OPERA EXPERT TO PARTICIPATE
This professional development workshop is for any educator—classroom teachers, art and drama teachers, music teachers, and teaching teams—ready to help their students discover the magical connections between language arts, social studies, science, mathematics and fine arts though music. The 2010 workshop explores Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Music! Words! Opera! methods and curriculum are easily applied to all grade levels K-12. Up to three hours of graduate credits are available from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (additional cost applies).

TEACHERS GIVE MUSIC! WORDS! OPERA! A STANDING OVATION

“[Music! Words! Opera!] was fantastic! I think this is accessible and relevant to all educators, and the presenters demystified the process. I also found it interesting that the presenters hit home the concept of the process being the product. All schools, all educators can benefit from this workshop.”

Amanda Archer
Skinner Middle School, Denver

“Through a project like this kids get to see and experience that history has something to do with them. The arts provide a safe place to talk about prejudice and sensitive issues.”

Karen Ritz on She Never Lost a Passenger
Samuels Elementary School, Denver

“There are so many ways this model can be applied in a school setting, whether you are a music or social studies or English teacher. I learned an incredible amount across the board, about opera specifically, and about working with and in groups.”

Carol Rankin
Skinner Middle School, Denver

THE MUSIC! WORDS! OPERA! curriculum was developed by OPERA America, the national support organization for professional opera companies.
