Gilpin County History Museum
A look back at the earlier days of Central City can be found at the Gilpin County History Museum, overlooking Lawrence Street on the hilltop. Toys, mining artifacts, antiques and an abundance of Central City Opera memorabilia are all displayed. The summer of 2011 will feature a new exhibit on The Nautilus, a submarine built in the 1890s and sunk on its maiden voyage in nearby Missouri Lake. The Gilpin County Historical Society also offers tours of the Thomas House, located one block past the Opera House on Eureka Street. A tour of this quaint home, containing the treasured possessions of one family from the nineteenth century, will take you back in time to the days when Central City was first settled.
